Emergency Lighting Inverters

UltraLITE Model ELU (1.5kW to 10kW)

Description
Meeting the NFPA 101 and NFPA 111 standards, the "UltraLITE Model ELU" is considered "Life Safety Equipment". The "UltraLITE" is also UL 924 listed, providing the required 90 minutes of emergency backup power, and is 100% compatible with all lighting applications and building security systems. This unit provides uninterrupted, regulated, continuous sinewave output for use with "normally on" lighting fixtures and exit lamps, as well as standby output for use with "normally off" emergency lighting fixtures. It is also generator-compatible. The "UltraLITE's" voltage regulation and performance characteristics make it an advantageous choice over competing lighting inverters. Available in 1.5kW to 10kW single phase sizes, the "UltraLITE" is ideal for schools, arenas, subways, parking structures, hospitals, airport terminals, and many other similar applications.

Single Phase Sizes: 1.5kW, 2.2kW, 3.0kW, 3.5kW, 4.2kW, 5.0kW, 6.0kW, 7.0kW, 7.5kW, 8.5kW, 10kW

FAQ
  • What are centralized lighting inverters and why use them?
A centralized lighting inverter is an electronic system that converts DC battery power to standard AC voltages to provide back-up for lighting systems. This inverter provides convenient power for many styles of lighting; increasing its usability. Centralized lighting inverters provide a single point source of power for all emergency lighting and exit signs. This offers simple maintenance and provides for a controlled logical wiring scheme. The output of the inverter is fed to a dedicated lighting panel which provides only the power for the lighting system.

  • Is the UltraLITE a fast transfer lighting inverter system?
  • The answer is YES and NO. Fast transfer systems do experience a break in power. The UltraLITE has an on line, double conversion topology which means that the inverter runs at all times. If in the event there is a loss of power, the inverter will draw energy from the batteries instead of the normal AC input source, with no break in the power. Thus it exceeds the requirements for fast transfer because it is no break, but technically it is not a fast transfer system.

  • Does the UltraLITE preserve battery life?
  • YES! The more a battery is discharged, the shorter the life. The UltraLITE incorporates Fuzzy Ranging into its design. Fuzzy Ranging is a feature that adjusts the switch to battery point based upon the percentage of load. In certain load conditions, the switch point to battery can be down to -50% of the nominal voltage. Most other inverters will switch to battery at around -15% of the input voltage. So if in the event a brownout condition occurs, in which the input voltage falls to -40% or -50% of nominal, the UltraLITE will still maintain power to the lights without utilizing precious emergency power. This results in the extended life of the batteries, which reduces the cost of maintenance.

  • Does the UltraLITE have a transfer time, and if so, is it important?
  • The UltraLITE DOES NOT have a transfer time, because of its online, double conversion topology. Transfer time is the time it takes to recognize and deliver emergency power. In some rare cases this may not be an issue but, for most cases, it should be zero. A zero transfer time insures that there is no interruption of power to the lighting fixtures. This is a very important factor with HID and high pressure sodium lighting. Lighting control systems and alarm circuits may also need a no break type system because of the circuit power requirements.

  • Does the UltraLITE extend the life of lighting fixtures?
  • YES! The UltraLITE insures clean, regulated and isolated power to all lighting fixtures protecting them from adverse electrical conditions that could damage the fixtures. This improves the performance and life of the fixture and prevents premature failure.

  • Is the UltraLITE capable of operating both normally off and normally on lighting fixtures?
  • YES! Available on the UltraLITE is an Normally On/Off bus. If the installation has normally off and normally on lighting, the UltraLITE has provisions for breakers and hard wire terminals for each type of lighting.

  • How does the UltraLITE increase life safety in emergency egress situations more than other lighting inverters?
  • YES! If there is an emergency situation and people must be evacuated out of a building, egress lighting is required. This scenario is very common, insomuch that it is a requirement in modern building codes. In these applications, certain egress lighting is dedicated for the purpose of life safety. If there is a power failure the egress lighting will illuminate and most normal lighting will shut off. When power returns, in many cases, certain lighting fixtures need time to illuminate, this could take up to 15 minutes. During this time, the building is in the dark. The UltraLITE's timed normally off bus makes sure that emergency lighting stays illuminated long enough until all normal lighting fixtures are illuminated. The timed normally off bus also works in the opposite situation. In many cases, there may be only a temporary power loss; maybe a few seconds or so and then power will return; and it may be required that the emergency lights do not need to be illuminated. The timed normally off bus will wait for a specified time period before turning the emergency lighting on.

  • Can the UltraLITE support different types of lighting at different voltages simultaneously?
  • YES! If in the event that there are two different types of lighting existing in the building at two different voltages, the UltraLITE can supply power to both simultaneously without the need of addition transformers. This capability applies both to normally on and normally off fixtures and separate breakers are available for each.

  • Is the UltraLITE NFPA 101 compliant?
  • YES! The UltraLITE is compatible with 7.9.3.1 "Periodic Testing of Emergency Lighting Equipment"

  • Is the UltraLITE compatible with HID and high pressure sodium lighting?
  • YES! The UltraLITE, being that it is a no break lighting inverter with voltage regulation, will protect these lighting systems. Loosing 1/2 cycle causes HID to extinguish and requires up to 10-15 minutes to restart!
