Power Processor (Series 700) 5kVA - 1MVA

Power Processor (Series 700) 5kVA - 1MVA

Description
The Power Processor is an electronic, microprocessor-controlled tap switching voltage regulator/power conditioner, which consists of an all-copper, multiple-tapped, triple-shielded isolation transformer. In conjunction with the electrostatic shields, the low output impedance of the transformer assures computer-grade performance with excellent noise and transient attenuation. For each of the 7 taps per phase, independently controlled inverse parallel electronic switches provide tight voltage regulation to +/- 2.5%. Digital processing provides fast, accurate regulation to within 1 cycle, without over- or under-shoot.

Single Phase Sizes: 5.0kVA, 8.0kVA, 10kVA, 15kVA, 20kVA, 25kVA

Three Phase Sizes: 10kVA, 15kVA, 25kVA, 30kVA, 45kVA, 50kVA, 75kVA, 100kVA, 125kVA, 150kVA, 225kVA, 300kVA, 500kVA, 1MVA

FAQ
  • What is a power line conditioning tap changer?
This is a power conditioning device that uses pre-selected transformer taps to compensate for varying line voltages. A microprocessor control selects the correct tap, and makes a connection through high-powered electronic switching devices. This technology is fast, accurate, and very efficient.

  • What advantages does tap changing technology offer?
Three major advantages: (1) When the input voltage rises dangerously above nominal, the microprocessor immediately calculates the correction necessary (within 1 cycle or less), and switches to the tap that provides that correction. (2) The Power Processor is a low output impedance, shielded isolation transformer. Because of the low output impedance, load changes do not affect other equipment connected the system. The shields further enhance the common mode noise rejection, eliminating all ground noise and spikes. (3) Size, weight, audible noise, and operational efficiency are all optimized.

  • When should tap changing technology be used?
Tap changing technology should be used for applications that require steady or a narrow operational band of voltages. This is a requirement for all high-level medical equipment, audio/visual reproduction, electronically sophisticated automation equipment, and commercial offices where computers and electronic devices are used.

  • Are all tap changing power line regulators the same?
No. Some systems use 6 taps, and the Power Processor uses 7 taps; resulting in 17% better regulation. For a (+10, -25%) input voltage variation of 35%, a 6-tap system has a voltage regulation of 5.8%; and a 7-tap system has a voltage regulation of 5%.

  • Can the Power Processor handle single phase input conditions?
No. In the case of single phase input conditions, the Power Processor has monitoring circuitry that automatically shuts down the unit. This protects the load, and insures that the line currents will not exceed critical values. Some power conditioners will continue operate under single phase conditions but only if the load is reduced to levels below 50%. (These power conditioners would need to be twice the size of their normal load capacity. The initial investment is 2x, and the heat losses resulting from operating below 50% load would also double.)

  • How much overload can tap changers handle?
Typically 200% for 10 seconds, and 1000% for 1 cycle. The electronic switching devices are protected by fast acting fuses.

  • Are tap changers as reliable as other technologies?
Tap changing technology has a long history of reliability; exceeding 200,000 hours of field compiled data. The output short circuit current of the isolation transformer is coordinated with the power circuit and protection devices providing design affirmation of the power conditioning features and longevity.
